1. Masala Idis is prepared by chopping the cooked idlis into small pieces. But, if you are using mini idlis, then you can skip this step.
2. In a frying pan heat the oil over moderate flame. Add black mustard seeds, curry leaves
and let them splutter, and fry for about 30 seconds.
3. When they splutter, add the finely chopped onions, grated ginger, and garlic and sauté for
a minute or two. Sauté the chopped onion, ginger and garlic till they turn light brown.
4. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for about 2 minutes till the oil gets separated.
Then add red chili powder and salt in the pan. Mix all the ingredients well.
5. Pour about 1/2 cup of water and cook until the masala begins to thicken. Keep stirring
the mixture from time to time, then add the chopped idli pieces or the mini idlis and stir
gently, so as not to break them.
6. Once they are cooked transfer the masala idlis to a serving bowl.
7. Serve with a hot cup of tea.
